Travel Information to Ooty

Ooty, formerly known as Udhagamandalam is one of the most admired hill stations located in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. Ooty is easily accessible by various means of transport and people generally love traveling by road as all routes leading to Ooty are quite scenic and picturesque. Here are options mentioned below to reach this beautiful hill station. 

Airways: 

Coimbatore International Airport is the closest airport located approximately 88 kms away from Ooty which is well connected with most of the Indian cities. There are various flights from many of the cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore to reach Coimbatore. One can also take a direct flight to Bangalore which is connected with most of the major cities across the globe. On reaching Coimbatore Airport, taxis and buses are available for Ooty. 

 

Railways: 

The Mettupalayam Railway Station which is 40 kms from Ooty is the nearest railhead serving this hill station. Several trains are available from nearby cities like Coimbatore, Mysore, Bangalore that connect to Mettupalayam. On reaching the railway station, you can hire buses or taxis to reach Ooty. Another fun way of getting to Ooty by train is boarding the heritage Nilgiri toy train which goes uphill moving through thick forests. Roadways: 

Ooty being a major tourist hill station in Tamil Nadu is also well connected by buses, both by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). These bus journeys are quite comfortable and takes only 7-8 hours/ an overnight journey to reach the Ooty bus stand. Self Drive: 

One can also reach Ooty by driving through the reserve forest area and viewing the change of scenery along the route which is truly a beautiful road trip to undertake. There are various routes to reach Ooty from Bangalore; one of the beautiful stretch is via Mysore. On reaching Gundlupet, proceed driving through the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary and then through the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Another route from Bangalore is to drive through Chamrajanagar Forest Area. Coimbatore is nearly 88 kms and one can reach via NH181 and Kochi too can be undertaken in 6-7 hours or less through NH544 connecting the Coimbatore- Gundlupet Highway.
