The founders of these schools, typically missionaries, civil servants and British soldiers, fell in love with the hills, forests, and distinct Europe-like climate of the region and proposed having their children studying there all the year round. Consequently, these schools went on to educate children of missionaries, serving or deceased soldiers,\u00a0 European businessmen and employees of the railways, postal and telegraph services.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them have grown in stature and have\u00a0gone\u00a0on to become pioneers in the Indian education system. The <strong>Lawrence Memorial Royal Military School<\/strong>, for instance, was setup in 1858 as per Henry Lawrence\u2019s vision of creating for orphans and children of British soldiers <em>\u201can asylum from the debilitating effects of the tropical climate, and the demoralizing influence of barrack-life; wherein they may obtain the benefits of a bracing climate, a healthy moral atmosphere, and a plain, useful, and above all religious education, adapted to fit them for employment suited to their position in life.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0The <strong>Lawrence School, Lovedale<\/strong> as it is known today is often ranked among the top boarding schools in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Breeks Memorial Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School<\/strong> is another school steeped in history. It was set up to educate children from lower income European and Anglo-Indian families.
